ENEMY 2013 Review;Complex and Brilliant Thriller
ENEMY:Jake Gyllenhaal meets his doppleganger
2 years ago, I watched French-Canadian Director Dennis Villeneuve Mystery Drama Incendies. My brain is blown away with single twist at the end. But his narration is more fascinating.
In 2013,he delivered another thriller “Prisoners”. In between Incendies and Prisoners, he made another movie ENEMY. In the same year, December Enemy selected for Toronto Film Festival. This time, he came up with brilliant script that hooks you till end credits. I heard incredible things about the movie and critics praised it as terrifying and enigmatically Glorious.
From then, I waited for the movie to watch in theatre, but it’s not released in India because of limited release. Finally I managed to watch it today. And one more time, I’m absolutely thrilled by Dennis Villeneuve Filmmaking. He is really good at making Drama/Thriller.
Honestly, I didn’t understand the movie clearly but I want to write a few lines about the movie(what I understood).Enemy is completely different from Dennis Villeneuve’s previous film. The movie plot is complex and must need a second viewing.
Enemy story revolving around two characters Adam and Anthony. Adam is history lecturer, who lives a mundane life. One day,a faculty member recommends a movie to Adam that he had watched a while ago. After watching the movie, Adam finds his “Double”.
It is part psychological drama, part psychosexual thriller. The Script is convoluted at some levels, the non-traditional narration is well managed and the cinematography is very bright with colour of Nicotine strains(I like it very much). Jake Gyllenhaal is very talented actor and he did a good job as History Lecturer(who is paranoid all the time) and Movie Actor(Who is aggressive in most of the times).

Movie started with message "Chaos is merely order waiting to be deciphered".But it's difficult to decipher if you don't pay attention.
There are several questions must be answered. In Opening scene, why a girl with high heels kills a Tarantula? What is the meaning of that Sex show? Why Anthony is there with depression? And In the Climax, when the accident happened, why the car glass take the form of SPIDER-WEB? At the same time, why Tarantula appears in mirror? In a middle of the movie, why a spider hovering over the city?
Finally I found Adam and Anthony are the same person. Because, when Anthony wife asks ”Are you seeing her again? ”The other “her” is Mary. Adam questions her mother about twins, she says “forget about the fantasy of being third rate movie actor”. She also says he(Adam) likes blueberries. Previous scene, Anthony explains he love to eat blueberries. I think, the whole concept related to Split personality. From the climax, I learn that “Adam” is REAL.
On a whole, Enemy is very intense and gripping Movie. If you don’t like Slow narration movies unconventional storytelling, then this is not your cup of tea.
